A kitchen utensil is an instrument, implement, tool or container used in restaurant kitchens to cook food. The bamboo kitchen tools and utensils that are gaining popularity in green kitchens around the world include salad bowls, plates, cutting boards, cutlery, baskets, spoons, forks, scoop, knife, etc. Bamboo utensils are sturdier and more ecologically friendly than plastic. These bamboo utensils also enhance barbecues and picnics - and best of all, they are biodegradable and easily disposable.
A measuring cup is a kitchen utensil used primarily to measure the volume of liquid or bulk solid cooking ingredients such as flour and sugar. The cup will usually have a scale marked in cups and fractions of a cup, and often with fluid measure and weight of a selection of dry foodstuffs. Measuring cups are also used to measure washing powder, liquid detergents or bleach, usually with a measuring cup not also used for food. Measuring cups may be made of plastic, glass, or metal. Maximum capacity usually ranges from 0.2 to 1 litre, though larger sizes are also available for commercial use. A nutcracker is a mechanical device for cracking nuts. These are also used for cracking the shells of crab and lobster in order to make the meat inside available for eating.
Another kitchen utensil is a spatula which has a long handle and a broad flat edge, used for lifting fried foods. The handle is long enough to keep the holder's hand away from what is being lifted, flipped, or scraped. Spatulas are usually made of plastic or metal, with a wooden or plastic handle to insulate them from heat. Spatulas made for outdoor grilling have very long handles.
Chopsticks are small tapered sticks used in pairs of equal length. Chopsticks are most commonly made of bamboo or plastic. The pair of sticks is manoeuvred in one hand and used to pick up pieces of food. Bamboo chopsticks are cheap, low in temperature conduction and provide good grip for holding food due to their matte surfaces. They can warp and deteriorate with continued use. Almost all cooking and disposable chopsticks are made of bamboo or wood. There are several types of kitchen implement which are termed scrapers. They can be made of metal, plastics such as polyethylene, nylon, or polypropylene, wood, rubber or silicone rubber. A plate scraper is used for this purpose, particularly since the long handle allows it to be used to remove contents of bowls as well as jars.
